The Second Annual Superhero Masquerade: A Retrospective

Last weekend was The Second Annual Superhero Masquerade. It was lots of fun, with characters coming from classic Marvel comics, high fanatasy novels and video games. We danced, talked, played Halo and generally had a good time. There is nothing like getting your friends to dress up as superheroes, feeding them junkfood and waiting for the chaos. though, to be honest, it was the most drama-free party I've hosted in a while. The only downside is that they ate all the food, even the pizza in the freezer, and that without even heating it.

Both people who knew about it and weren't able to make it and people I've met since then have beena sking em to host another masquerade. While I'm still planning on a Third Annual Superhero Masquerade (its hardly annual if you do it only twice,) I don't know about another one exactly like it this summer. Though, I did promise Hanna and Meli something for whent hey get back, so I may have another masquerade, perhaps with a different them, perhaps not. I do really want to see Luke's Kilik costume and Eric in a purple suit as the Joker.

Anyway, here is a rundown on the costumes and characters. If I miss anyone, I'm sorry.

I went as Jubilee, and managed to keep my raincoat-turned-trenchcoat and dark glasses on for most of the party despite the sweltering heat and general night-time darkness.Connie and Chip showed up clad entirely in pleather as Trinity and Neo. Robert wore the Link costume he is in the process of improving for GenCon, though its already pretty impressive, seeing as he sowed it himself. Roman went as a very convincing Gambit, who performed various card tricks, including fifty-two card pick-up. I'm still picking up cards. Andy wore a suit, a gas mask and a bag over his head to portray the scarecrow. Bekki dressed in a long-flowing Rennaisance type dress for her character, the Scarlett Witch. Ed went as Nate Summers, which meant a leather jacket, no shirt and a drawing od an "X" on his chest. Though half-way through the party he was wearing Rachel Lee's sparkly, black shirt. Rachel, herself, was "The Spirit of the 80's" in a black fullbody leotard and brightly colored cape. Ryan, who showed up late from bartending and sushi rolling, was the Dread Pirate Roberts, correct even down to the mustache styling, though he was missing his mask and sword. Bayley made up for that by brining his training sword to go with his kendo outfit. Karolyne also went with the Japanese theme, and wore a lovely blue yukata. Matt, who told me he was going to dress up as Bongo Bongo and fight Robert/Link, ended up raiding Robert's closet and going as a Sith Lord. Val made herself an excellent Sailor Mars costume. She arrived with Sarah, who wore a mask made from Full Metal Alchemist transmutation circles. John claimed that a fisherman was a superhero and wore that outfit. T made a brief appearance as the Ninj4 (not to be confused with a ninja.) Stina, Elina, H, Charlie, Caitlin and Rachel C. showed up without costumes, though Elina did claim to be "Rogue in disguise," earning her points for trying.

I was planning on photographing all of this with the digital camera and putting them up for your viewing pleasure/embarressment, but my brother took the digital camera with him to Singapore and Japan, leaving em with a regular camera. So, once the photos are developed, you can see them.
